If you’re in need of a new Enduro motorcycle, the 2013 KTM 500 EXC might just fit the bill. The 500 EXC has plenty of advantages, not the least of which being that the bike is street legal, so you don’t have to worry about finding a trailer to haul it to the track. This model year saw a number of noteworthy upgrades and enhancements, and the bike is still one of the top models in the dual sport class.
The KTM 500 EXC replaced the 450 and 530 EXCs from the previous years, and it took many of its parts from the XC-W. This includes the 510cc single cylinder overhead cam engine with fuel injection, exhaust pipe, chassis frame and even suspension. The blinkers and sideview mirrors set the EXC apart from its strictly offroad counterpart. It’s also tuned to improve emissions, so the bike complies with road regulations. Once you get to the track, you can really take advantage of the bike’s power and precision handling.
KTM really got a lot right with the design of the EXC, especially when it comes to throttle control. Despite tight regulations that dual sport bikes have to adhere to, KTM found a way to equip the EXC with an impressive throttle that responds better than most dual sport bikes. This makes it simple to loft the front wheel and impress the other riders. This is due in part to the crankshaft and lightweight connecting rod and aluminum piston that reduce overall engine weight and get you more “get up and go.”
The front fork suspension is the same as the XC-W, but it has been retuned for the dual sport model. The alterations make the EXC’s suspension more precise and responsive than pretty much any other dual sport. It does take some getting used to, as the response when you hit a bumpy patch is quick and firm. However, once you get used to it, it’s easy to see just how forgiving the suspension is when you’re cruising over a rocky patch of terrain.
